A little info on Phi Phi Islands
Located in Thailand, between Phuket and the Malacca coast. Here lies a little paradise everyone knows as Koh Phi Phi. widely known as the Phi Phi Islands.
Phi Phi Islands are actually an archipelago of 6 islands. All of which can easily be called miraculous in their appearance and unreal in their existence. What many call the most beautiful islands in the world, only 2 out of 6 islands are big enough. The others are so small, they can pass off as just limestone rocks in the sea.
These islands are quite possibly the poster boy of Thailand. Did you know that the gorgeous Maya Beach was where the big Leonardo Di Caprio blockbuster ”The Beach” was filmed?
But there is more to these islands than what they let on…
The Pros of Phi Phi
In true Asian style, there are some gorgeous affordable luxury accommodations, eateries and venues to satisfy a more sophisticated crowd -and quieter cleaner beaches to be visited. There are private boats to be rented and private chefs to be hired- the possibilities are endless and cater to all budgets!
Asia is significantly cheaper than other exotic destinations, such as Bora Bora, Maldives, or Central and Latin America.
The Cons of Phi Phi Island
Massively destroyed by the devastating 2004 tsunami, Phi Phi was rebuilt almost from scratch and came back with a vengeance.
A lot with argue that it has since lost its magic as it is now packed with double the tourists, pollution and rubbish. To be perfectly honest… they are not entirely wrong!
Tourists are destroying the place to a big extent. It’s definitely crawling with the typical 20 years old’s on spring break striving to be as loud and obnoxious as they can.
There are big signs of trash pollution – although a huge cleanup effort has begun in 2018 for the restoration and protection of its natural treasures and ts somewhat missing that traditional Asian charm, which is why I would suggest combining it with other Thai destinations such as Koh Samui, Phuket, Krabi, and Bangkok.
Easy ways to save the planet whilst traveling
- Do you use cotton buds for your ears and/ or makeup? The world’s first plastic-free and reusable cotton swabs are here and I am beyond excited! Just ONE of these eco-friendly swabs replaces over 1000 cotton swabs that end up in our oceans! They come in gorgeous colors, are durable, and super easy to clean! Take the pledge today, I have received my order, and couldn’t be happier! This link gives you 10% off off your order 🙂
- Are you a smoker? Cigarette butts are the single greatest source of ocean pollution, with more than 60 million collected over 32 years! To save our oceans, just carry a portable ashtray like this one in your backpack! This one is unisex, totally stylish and can be fastened to any backpack! With every puff, you are taking a huge step towards responsible tourism.
- Do you use plastic bottles and straws? A simple reusable cup and metal straw are the best, and contribute a lot to the solution; trust me! 100,000 marine creatures and 1million sea birds die from plastic entanglement in a year. I have tried paper straws and pasta straws too, but I really hate them! This stainless steel straw set comes with a handy pouch, and a brush to clean too! Adore!
Other super easy ways to be eco-friendly
- Carry plastic-free shampoo and conditioner in your suitcase. There is no need to carry plastic bottles that you will later throw away. Not when you can get top-quality shampoo and conditioner in a bar! This conditioner bar is excellent – 100% vegan, not tested on animals, no palm oil, smells great, lasts for AGES and keeps hair safe from the humidity of exotic countries! There is also a shampoo and conditioner set available, let me know what you think of it, as I purchased mine individually as above.
- Recycle. Save your plastic for the recycle bins and for the love of God please STOP throwing trash in the ocean!
- Eat local food, and carry a takeaway box to take back any leftovers! Local food is most often delicious, and you are also supporting the local food vendors!
Why Should I Visit Phi Phi?
If you want beauty as far as your eye can see, Phi Phi is a must! Here you’ll lose yourself in crystal blue and emerald green waters! Feast your eyes on the vast contrast of cliffs, jungle, and sea! Watch monkeys swim in the sea! Watch the sunset in the most beautiful colors! Snorkel dive, eat and drink to your heart’s content. Phi Phi is quite simply, a dream.
It’s no wonder that Koh Phi Phi has been included in Nat Geo’s Guide of the Best 10 Islands in the world! So take the plunge… To the Tropical Holiday of your Dreams!
My Phi Phi experience
I spend 7 days on the island – sandwiched between Koh Samui and Phuket. My expectations were BIG as Koh Samui exceeded every expectation!
But Phi Phi Islands…did not disappoint! As mentioned above, the natural beauty is to die for and the biggest selling point for visiting. The weather was incredible, hot and dry and exactly how I like it! This is despite me visiting in Mid July aka the rainy season of Thailand.
Although relatively expensive, (by Asian standards) our hotel central Phi Phi Don was stunning. The views were to die for, the food was great – and I was definitely sad to leave.
How to get there
The easiest way to Koh Phi Phi is to take the two-hour ferry from Phuket. You can also take the ferry straight from Krabi. View the ferry schedule here. There is no airport on the island – for Asian and European routes, the nearest airport is Phuket and Krabi. You will then need transport to the pier, and a ferry to Phi Phi Islands.
Where to stay – Koh Phi Phi Hotels
Marketed as a tropical paradise, Phi Phi Don is the larger of the two big islands but has no roads of its own. Phi Phi Leh, the smaller island, has no habitats.
Below you will find my recommended Phi Phi island accommodations! All hotels recommended below are great hotels with affordable luxury qualities.
1. Central Area
Located between Tonsai Bay and Loh Dalum, it is the liveliest place to stay! It boasts a huge choice in regards to restaurants, bars, shops, and beaches. It is central to everything and therefore acts as a good base. The nightlife is however very busy. Therefore, if you are trying to avoid it or are traveling with young children – this area is not for you.
Recommended hotels in Central Phi Phi
The PP Charlie resort is where i chose to stay – and i cannot recommend it enough! Centrally located, you can walk anywhere in PP Don, and the infinity pool is to die for. Poolside menu is excellent – pizzas, burgers and sushi etcetera – beautifully presented! My advice? Book a deluxe room – instead of the classic double. I initially booked the classic basic room but found it tiny. Luckily i managed to upgrade ta a deluxe for a small fee and my room was GORGEOUS. Spacious bungalow right next to the pool!
The Phi Phi Cliff Beach Resort. 3*
2. Laem Thong:
About a 40 minutes boat ride from the Central Area of PP Don, Laem Thong is definitely the destination of choice for those looking for a break. All activities are related to the beach and the sun – its got textbook relaxing holiday written ALL over it.
Recommended Hotels in Laem Thong
Perfect for honeymoons, the holiday inn provides sophisticated elegance and affordable luxury
Slightly more expensive, this 5* luxurious hotel will provide the perfect home in paradise.
3. Long Beach Area
Only a 5-minute boat ride from the Central Area its offers both tranquility and less tourism. At the same time, you have full access (via a boat) to the good restaurants, and bars of the Central Area. In conclusion, Long Beach is more budget-friendly
Recommended Hotel in Long Beach Phi Phi
Relax, unwind, rest and wonder at this beautiful and affordable beach resort!
4. East Coast
East Coast is a 1 hour Boat Ride away from the Central Phi Phi Don. This area is as remote and secluded as it comes. No spring break shenanigans to be seen around here!
Small bungalow resorts offering unpretentious accommodation choices to those who really want to get away from it all. Water sports – kayaking, snorkeling, and scuba diving – are the main activities on offer.
Narrow Beaches, mountains and thick vegetation make this a haven for nature and peace lovers.
Recommended Hotels in the East Coast
Island Village Beach Resort 4*
I love 4* hotels -, especially in Asia. They provide such an affordable luxurious feel to my travels and they don’t break the bank! In Europe, so many overpriced 4* hotels are a complete disgrace! Luckily for you, this one is gorgeous
A basic hotel that offers basic amenities at a budget friendly price. This is also partly because of its location – a one-hour boat ride from the center. But if you are keen to travel to paradise, stay away from the crowds and are low on funds, this is the one for you.
Things to do in Phi Phi Island – Phi Phi Island Hopping
Imagine yourself on a classic Thai longtail boat cruising the pristine waters, and limestone cliffs and hopping from one spectacular island to the next. In Phi Phi, this is reality. You can take a boat tour and do it in a day, or rent a private boat and take your time exploring the wonders God left so generously in Thailand. However you choose to do it though, Phi Phi island hopping is a must.

Things to do in Phi Phi Island – Best Panoramic Views
The Phi Phi Viewpoint.
From the reggae Bar, walk towards Dalum Bay and follow the signs to the viewpoint. Wear Trainers, mosquito repellent and for the love of God buy a gallon of water before you climb up there!!!
Elevated at 186 meters high, it’s a 20 minutes hike up a pretty steep flight of stairs! There you’ll see ViewPoint 1. After that, its a further 15 minutes of jungle trekking to go higher to ViewPoint 2. And YES I complained the whole way there
But once you get there- WOAH. Magnificent panoramic views of the islands, jungle, and sea. And to top it off, picture-perfect beauty as far as your eyes can see. You can see all of Phi Phi Leh, and the bays of Tonsai Village and Loh Dalum. Seriously, u gotta go. (preferably not hangover)
Tips for the Phi Phi Viewpoint
- Do not attempt to sneak alcohol to the ViewPoint- it is Muslim owned and it is strictly prohibited.
- Definitely visit early in the day to avoid the crowds or later afternoon for sunset views
- Once you get to ViewPoint 2, allow yourself the time to sit at the edge of what feels like the world… and marvel at the breathtaking view.

From incredible Pad Thai to fresh seafood, kebabs and brunch spots, there is a must to experience and indulge on the island. There is a spot for every taste bud and a menu for every budget!

I have so many shots and videos of them swimming and stuffing their little faces with bananas! Makes me sad to think they are maybe left without during the low seasons months…
Brilliant post, so detailed! And I love the little section about being more environmentally friendly while travelling! It’s so important and often totally overseen by tourists! 🙂
thank you Valerie! my trip to Thailand actually changed my entire outlook on traveling. I have always been mindful of my footprint but after Thailand i made it my mission to leave nothing than my footsteps when i leave a country! So much beauty, as far as the eye can see, and much of it destroyed due to irresponsible tourism. So heartbreaking !
